We’re STEM Mentors for the Second Year in a row
We are excited to announce that we will be taking part in the 2020 STEM Challenge. This is the second year in a row that we will be acting as STEM mentors.
The STEM Challenge partners with local schools in order to help groups of students to create a product using science, technology, engineering and maths – the STEM subjects. This year, the challenge is to “design and build a product, using the elements of STEM, that have a positive impact on people’s emotional wellbeing and/or mental health”.
As Shropshire’s leading business telecoms provider we utilise the STEM subjects throughout the business on a daily basis. We have a vast array of expertise in technology, especially following such a successful year for our flagship product, NT Multimedia, in 2019.
We were proud to have been successful in last year’s STEM Challenge, with our team winning the Best Operating Model category. This year, partnered with The Grove School in Market Drayton, we are aiming to create a fantastic product that can really make a difference to people’s emotional wellbeing.
This year we have two STEM mentors participating in the challenge, both of whom are looking forward to getting started! Becky Homersley, one of the STEM mentors, has spoken about the challenge; “We can’t wait to get started with the STEM Challenge again this year. We’re excited to be working with The Grove School and hopefully encouraging the students to consider a future career in technology. It is a really interesting subject matter this year and something that is important to address both in schools and in the workplace”.
Encouraging local school children, the next generation of tech experts, to consider careers in STEM subjects is something that we, as a business telephone system provider, are passionate about. This is especially true in the case of STEM apprenticeships in the local Shropshire area.
We’re sure that the children from The Grove School will learn a lot from us, but we will also learn a lot from them too!
The finale of the STEM challenge will be held at the Marches Centre of Manufacturing and Technology on the 3rd of July. The challenge will be judged in 9 categories; best work plan, best presentation, best team work, best entrepreneurial team, best operating model, business champion, mentor recognition award, people’s choice award and the overall winner.
We would like to wish all of the schools taking part good luck, as well as our fellow mentors; Magna International, Aico, Avara Foods, WPD UK, Paveaways, Bridgnorth Aluminum, Protolabs, Schneider Electrical, Busch, Hitachi and Grainger and Worrall.
A big thanks goes to Entrust and the Shropshire Star for organising the STEM Challenge as well as the headline sponsors; Denso, Rokit, Avara Foods, Protolabs, Telford and Wrekin Council, The Careers & Enterprise Company, Hitachi, The Marches Centre, 7Video and Jesomnite.
We will keep our blog and social media channels updated on our progress.
